Time for immigration reform, Hispanic leader says

To the Editor:

In working within the Hispanic community in Oklahoma for decades I have witnessed the impact the current immigration system has on the individual, their family and their community. I have dealt with its failures as it impacts the people who live, work and worship with us.

We need a new immigration policy that recognizes the Imago Dei in every human being. Any legislation passed must protect families from being separated; this includes husbands and wives, parents and children, as well as making our borders secure.

It has been nearly 30 years since Congress last made serious changes to our immigration policy, which is more than sufficient time to prove that the system is broken. If we, as a country, want to remain true to the values set forth by our founding fathers, it is imperative that the House step up to the plate and pass an immigration reform bill.

The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference will continue to pray for leadership at the national level to work on immigration reform for the betterment of the United States.
